Alex Hernandez

Operations Intern

Summer Intern Project

“My summer project goals were to first learn about the metal processing operations at Olympic Steel’s Bartlett, IL facility, and then find ways to improve overall efficiency and productivity. I focused on optimizing daily tasks, improving scheduling inefficiencies, and streamlining inventory management efforts. I also helped develop a framework for implementing a Weldment process to improve workflow.”

  • Why did you choose to intern for Olympic Steel?
I chose Olympic Steel for the ability to gain real experience with industrial and general operations.

  • What do you hope to accomplish during your time here at Olympic Steel?
I wish to gain a better understanding of the processes of CNC machining and metalworking.

  • What do you like to do in your free time?
I love playing soccer or golfing with my friends, and I enjoy anything Pokemon too. Sableye is my favorite.

  • What is your proudest moment so far?
Being able to attend school on a full scholarship took a lot of financial pressure off of me and my family, letting me focus more on the schoolwork than paying everything back.
